Our latest project in Nasr City demonstrates how intelligent AHU design combined with variable-speed drives can dramatically cut HVAC energy consumption without sacrificing air quality. Following a full retrofit of the hospital's air handling infrastructure, GTS has confirmed a 40% reduction in HVAC-related energy consumption — a result achieved without compromising the strict air quality standards required across operating theatres and ICU wards.
Intelligent AHU Design at the Core
The retrofit centred on replacing constant-speed air handling equipment with GTS’s variable-frequency-drive-compatible AHU range, allowing fan speed — and therefore energy draw — to track real-time ventilation demand rather than running at a fixed rate around the clock. Paired with IE3-compliant EC motors, the new configuration delivers the same reliable airflow the hospital’s clinical spaces depend on, at a fraction of the running cost.
Critically, the redesign preserved — and in several zones improved — the facility’s air quality safeguards. Operating theatres and ICUs retained their required filtration grades and pressure regimes throughout the retrofit, with commissioning tests confirming compliance before any unit was handed over for clinical use.
Energy savings only matter if the air quality holds — in a hospital, that isn’t negotiable. This retrofit proves you don’t have to choose between the two.
A Model for Healthcare Retrofits
This project builds directly on GTS’s broader healthcare HVAC work in Nasr City, Cairo — including HEPA-grade air handling installations with redundant systems and round-the-clock monitoring for operating theatres and ICUs. The energy-efficiency results from this retrofit are now informing how GTS approaches similar upgrades across other hospital and healthcare facilities in the region, where ageing HVAC infrastructure often represents one of the largest untapped opportunities for operating-cost reduction.
